Life in Limbo

It is hard to believe that we left Christchurch five and a half weeks ago.  When we drove up to the North Island we really had no plan in place as to what we were going to be doing, our life was in limbo until we had sold the house and could then start searching for “our” boat.

Life in Limbo is a strange feeling, not having to get up and go to work every day, not worrying about what the day or time is.  Thanks to a fabulous website called kiwihomesitters we have been able to spend very little of our savings by going into various places and looking after their property, pets and other assorted animals.

Our first house-sit was near Karaka, Auckland which took us through Christmas and New Years.  A fabulous house with 2 horses and some cattle to look after not to mention a fabulous swimming pool.  From there we headed over to the East Coast where we are living in a farmhouse on a hill just north of KatiKati.

We are surrounded by bush on all sides with one clear patch in front of the house where we can see through to the coastline – absolutely gorgeous.
We have fallen into our own mini routines each day which consists of heaps of walking around the farm checking on the animals (3 goats, 2 horses, 4 cows and 2 calfs) along with 2 little dogs plus Hunny.

Craig spends time outside pottering around doing gardening, completely cleaned the fishpond and when not doing that can be found in the shade having a nap with 3 little doggies. IMG_1546

Every day I find another area in the house to spring clean, being a farmhouse it had that lived in look and I have been enjoying the challenge of tidying it up. When the owners arrive home this Saturday I am hoping they will be pleasantly surprised. When I am not doing that I can be found outside reading a book (have read three since we have been here) or just sitting and watching all the different birds that seem to be in the area (fantails, tui, pheasant, hawks, kingfishers to name a few).

We will be leaving here this Saturday and driving to Hamilton where I have lined up a 2 night house-sit to look after a 10week old husky puppy. From there it will be back to Karaka where we have been asked to return to the first house-sit as they are wanting to head away for 9 days and would love us to return. Straight after that we drive back over to the East Coast where we have a 3 week house-sit in Whakamarama. From there we head back to Hamilton to look after the Husky pup until the end of March.

So with our free accommodation looked after for the foreseeable future it means our savings will last that much longer. Our goal is that by the time the Hamilton house-sit is done we have purchased a boat and can head into the next new phase of our adventurous life.

We have continued looking on the internet for various catamarans and there may be a couple of possibilities over in Australia.  However as mentioned at the beginning of this post until the house is sold we will continue to live a Life in Limbo.
